Abingdon Residents Displaced by Townhouse Fire: Officials

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said residents were being assisted by Harford County.

A family in Constant Friendship was displaced from their townhouse Tuesday after fire broke out in the basement, officials said.

At 7:49 p.m., a residential alarm in the 3300 block of Midland Court alerted authorities that there was a fire, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

A juvenile on the second floor heard the alarm go off and went downstairs, where she found smoke coming from the basement, the fire marshal reported.

Due to the automatic alarm, firefighters were immediately dispatched; crews from Abingdon, Bel Air, Joppa-Magnolia and APG responded, according to the report.

When firefighters arrived, they found a working basement fire, according to the Abingdon Fire Company, whose members spent more than two hours at the scene.

The source of the blaze was traced to a dryer, according to the fire marshal.

The fire caused $100,000 in structural damage, and $50,000 worth of items were damaged, the fire marshal reported.

Harford County Disaster Assistance was assisting the family, according to the fire marshal.

The Harford County hazardous materials team provided assistance for the 40 firefighters who responded to the scene, the fire marshal reported. Temperatures were below freezing Tuesday night, and the hazmat crew offered rehabilitative services.
