Deadly Disease Outbreak Shuts Down PG County Hospital Neonatal Unit Again: Report

Authorities are scrambling after two infants test positive for the pseudomonas bacteria.

CHEVERLY, MD — Two babies have tested positive at Prince George's County Hospital Center for the pseudomonas bacteria, the same deadly infection that resulted in two baby deaths and forced the shutdown of the neonatal intensive care unit back in August, according to a report.

ABC 7's Brad Bell has confirmed on Twitter that the PG Hospital Center NICU has been shut down again after two infants tested positive for the bacteria.

The death of two babies resulted in the discovery of pseudomonas this summer. It was found in three babies since the investigation began. The bacterium can cause severe illness and death.

Hospital officials transferred five babies to other hospitals with NICUs as investigators try to get a handle on the problem, according to an NBC Washington report. The NICU had been opened for only a month after it had closed back in August. In that incident, nine infants were moved out of the NICU.

The newborns were moved out of an abundance of caution, according to the report.
