Severe thunderstorms in the region blew the roof an apartment building near the University of Maryland campus in College Park Thursday afternoon, while a Montgomery County woman was struck by lightning.

A portion of the roof on the 7-story Enclave apartment building, located in the 8700 block of Route 1 in College Park, was torn off by high winds about 5 p.m., according to Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady. Part of the roof landed on the road.

Route 1 is between Greenbelt Road and Berwyn Road while crews clean up debris, Brady said on Twitter.

Severe thunderstorms pummeled the region Thursday afternoon, producing large hail, heavy rain and damaging winds.

Montgomery County

Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, used his Twitter account to share updates. He said several cars were stuck in high water at Goldsboro Road and Massachusetts Avenue. Lightning reportedly struck a woman near Old Georgetown Road and Democracy Boulevard. She is believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery County’s Emergency Communications Center had a high call volume as numerous reports of wires down, damaged transformers, and power outages came in, Piringer said.

Residents without power should call PEPCO at 1-877-737-2662.
