The trial for Michael Conti, was postponed Tuesday so he can secure a new attorney.
The Maryland State Attorney's office was prepared to prosecute Conti in the criminal jury trial, set for Tuesday morning, on a series of theft charges. But when brought before the judge, Conti requested to postpone the trial while he seeks a new attorney.
Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge William C. Mulford told Conti that he needed to provide "a meritorious reason" for swapping attorneys on the day of his trial. Conti replied that he would feel more comfortable with a new attorney.
"Your comfort level does not matter to me at all," Mulford said.
The judge then ordered Conti to bring in his new attorney, along with a good reason for changing his representation, or the trial would proceed as scheduled.
After conferring, Conti returned, saying his current attorney could not proceed in Tuesday's trial due to a family emergency. The trial was then postponed until Dec. 4.
Conti was recently where he asks an attorney interviewing him if he's for hire.
