Judge Throws Out Harshest Charges in UMD Beating Case

Jurors will no longer be able to consider first-degree assault charges against two Prince George's County Police Officers after Judge Beverly J. Woodward threw out the charges Wednesday, according to a Washington Post story.

The officers are charged with beating an unarmed University of Maryland student in 2010.

Woodward said prosecutors had not proven that John McKenna, the UMD student, had sustained "serious and permanent injuries," according to the Washington Post story.

Second-degree assault and misconduct charges will still be considered.
