New Dogs at Westminster
Count them. Seven new breeds at the 2016 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.
And here they are! In alphabetical order, making a total of 187 breeds (199 breeds and varieties).
- The triple-coated Bergamasco, a medium-sized herding dog, is quick and agile. This dog doesn’t shed and is considered to be hypo-allergenic. Eight Bergamasco champions are entered this year and Bergamasco Numbeer 11 is the winner of the breed who will be on television tonight beginning at 8 pm along with Picardy Number 21.
- Also in the Herding Group is the Berger Picard or Picardy Shepherd, the dog in the film, “Because of Winn Dixie.”
- The Boerboel, a Working Group dog, originated in South Africa and makes a good watch dog.
- The Cimeco dell’Etna, a hound, is independent, hardy and healthy. This sighthound requires very little grooming and the breed is hundreds of years old, yet new to the AKC. Look for Cimeco Number 8 in the evening program.
- The curly-coated Lagotto Romagnolo is a truffle hunter in the Sporting Group and has an excellent sense of smell.
- The all-around Miniature American Shepherd (formerly the mini-Aussie - Australian Shepherd) is sure to become a favorite in the Herding Group and is one of the newest breeds, less than 50 years old. Keep your eye on the Miniature American Shepher Number 20, Best of Breed.
- And finally, a hearty welcome to the Spanish Water Dog, a curly-coated non-shedding breed, also in the Herding Group. Number 12 will be on television this evening.
