The Orioles' third baseman has been his team's most valuable position player, and it's not even close. While Baltimore outfielder Mark Trumbo does lead the team in more conventional statistics like batting average and on-base percentage, Machado leads him in wins above replacement by a large 1.9-to-0.7 edge.

Wins above replacement (WAR) measures how many more wins a player contributes to his team than an average player would. Machado is second in the majors in WAR, trailing only Dexter Fowler of the Chicago Cubs, with 2.2. The 1.2 gap in WAR between the Orioles' top two players is the largest in baseball, tied with the Colorado Rockies.
