I-95 Tanker Fire Update: Cleanup Moved to Shoulder

Vehicle fire and fuel cleanup resulted in hours-long closure of lanes on Interstate 95 south of the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

BALTIMORE, MD — A tanker fire snarled traffic on Interstate 95 in Baltimore for approximately four hours Friday morning.

After 11:30 a.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority reported that all lanes had reopened in the area of I-95 at Russell Street. The tanker was moved to the right shoulder of I-95 south.

The tractor-trailer fire was reported around 7:30 a.m. and temporarily caused a complete shutdown of the highway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Lanes were reopened on I-95 north by 7:45 a.m.

The blaze created heavy delays on I-95 south, with backups extending to the toll plaza at the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Traffic on I-95 south was being detoured onto MD 295 at exit 52. Travelers from downtown Baltimore were being detoured on I-395 away from the scene. Drivers were encouraged to take I-695 and I-895 as alternate routes.

The fire was out before 8 a.m., officials said, noting that after 8:40 a.m., fuel cleanup was continuing. The Maryland Department of the Environment was called to the scene because of the need to remove fuel.
