BWI Flights Canceled As 'Bomb Cyclone' Blankets East Coast

BWI Airport canceled flights Thursday as some Northeast airports closed or canceled thousands of flights amidst fierce storms.

HANOVER, MD — Fierce winter storms clobbering the East Coast led to hundreds of flight cancellations in the Northeast Thursday morning, and led to more than two dozen canceled flights out of BWI Marshall Airport. The flights being grounded were all headed to cities being pummeled by the "bomb cyclone" storm dropping snow and bringing harsh winds to Providence, Boston, Hartford, Newark and New York, as well as Norfolk, Virginia, which is under a blizzard warning.

More flights could be delayed or canceled on Thursday as airport closings were reported in the Northeast and the storm churned its way north. John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York was closed Thursday just before 10 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration announced. The airport was expected to reopen at 2 p.m., the FAA said. They urged travelers who are flying into and out of JFK to check with their airline about the status of their flight.

Southern Maryland is in the midst of a blizzard as the storm pummels the East Coast, including Maryland's Eastern Shore, while the Baltimore area has received a couple inches of snow and several counties have canceled schools because of slick roads and frigid temperatures. A winter weather advisory in effect for Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles and Harford counties has been extended until 1 p.m. Thursday, says the National Weather Service, which called for a maximum snowfall of 3 inches in those areas. A wind chill advisory will kick in at 10 p.m. Thursday and run through noon Friday.
