Here's The Best Pancake Place In Maryland

Here's where you can get the best pancakes in Maryland, according to the Daily Meal.

OCEAN CITY, MD — You can whip them up quickly at home, and find them at any restaurant that serves breakfast. Some call them flapjacks, most say pancakes, and they're a tasty blend of carbs, topped with butter, sometimes fruit, and of course, syrup. Filling, yet sweet, and best enjoyed with great coffee (or milk for the kids), you can find pancakes at tons of restaurants.

But to give your tastebuds a treat, the Daily Meal decided to take the guesswork out of the equation and published the definitive list of best restaurants serving pancakes in each state. "Finding someone who actively dislikes big, fluffy flapjacks topped with butter and maple syrup is about as rare as finding a unicorn. The reason? They’re one of the most delicious foods in existence," the food website says.

In Maryland, the best restaurant for pancakes is Happy Jack Pancake House in Ocean City, the website says. The restaurant has turned pancakes into an art, offering a variety that includes blueberry, strawberry, bacon, pecan, old-fashioned classic cakes, M&M pancakes, and an Elvis pancake that has peanut butter chip morsels topped with sliced bananas and whipped cream.

Here's what the authors had to say about the Happy Jack Pancake House:

"This Ocean City landmark, located just a block from the ocean, is a must-visit what at this seaside town. Going strong for more than 50 years, Happy Jack offers a whopping 19 varieties of pancakes, all made with a batter recipe that hasn’t changed in decades. The classics are all spot-on, including blueberry pancakes, pecan pancakes, and golden old-fashioned pancakes; but we suggest you opt for something a little bit wilder, like Peanut Butter Lover’s (filled with Reese’s pieces and peanut butter chips and topped with peanut butter and whipped cream), S’mores (filled with crumbled graham crackers and chocolate chips and topped with marshmallow), and Cinnamon bun (seasoned with cinnamon and topped with icing). The bacon pancakes are also an egg’s best friend."

To come up with the list, the Daily Meal omitted all chains like IHOP. "Great pancakes are light and fluffy, with an exterior that’s browned and slightly crisped from the butter. They should be just sweet enough that the addition of maple syrup isn’t overbearing, but savory enough to share a fork with bacon and eggs," the website said.

What makes a pancake a state’s best, exactly? All of these restaurants serve pancakes that have achieved a level of local (or national) renown, and while some of them only have a few different styles on their menu, the authors sought out places that serve a variety of pancakes; the more batters, fillings, and toppings available, the better (especially pure maple syrup, not the synthetic stuff). But at their heart, all of these pancakes start with quality ingredients, and can hold their own even when served without any fillings or toppings.
