Ground Beef Recalled For Potential E. Coli Contamination

Over 132,000 pounds of Cargill ground beef products made from the chuck portion of the carcass have been recalled because of a potential E. coli contamination, according to the USDA. The products were shipped to retail locations nationwide, the USDA said.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service was notified of an investigation of E. coli illnesses on Aug. 16. The agency, along with the CDC and state health and agricultural departments determined that the raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illnesses.

According to the USDA, the investigation identified 17 illnesses and one death. Illness onset dates ranged from July 5-25.

The USDA said the Cargill products were identified as part of an investigation into an Aug. 30 recall of ground beef products.

"FSIS’ traceback information indicated that case-patients consumed ground beef products purchased at various retail stores that were supplied by Cargill Meat Solutions," the USDA said in a press release.

The USDA is concerned the recalled products may be in consumers' freezers. The agency is urging consumers not to eat the recalled products and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The products were produced and packaged on June 21 and bear establishment number “EST. 86R” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
