Fare Increase To Take Effect On Maryland Transit Systems
The Maryland Transit Administration will increase fares for several services starting in June based on a state mandate.

MARYLAND — Fares will increase in June on several public transit systems operated by the Maryland Department of Transportation. Fares for the bus, light rail, subway and disability transit service will be impacted.
The single-trip fare will increase by 10 cents, according to the Maryland Transit Administration, or MTA, which operates the public transportation systems. Local Bus, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MobilityLink will increase from $1.80 to $1.90.
The new fares will take effect Sunday, June 23.

The MTA encourages riders to purchase monthly fare passes, which will increase from $72 to $74 per month.
"The monthly pass provides cost savings, particularly for Marylanders that use transit every day to get to work, shopping and entertainment," according to the MTA.

Officials said that the fare increase is legislatively mandated by the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, which requires the MTA to increase transit fare by a minimum of 10 cents if there are increases in the consumer price index over the previous two years. According to state officials, the consumer price index increased by 4.2 percent from 2017 to 2019.
Commuter bus and MARC train fares are scheduled to be reviewed in 2020, and that process takes place every five years, state officials reported.
