6 Kayakers Rescued Near Middle River In Storm: Officials

Six people were rescued during a severe thunderstorm, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Six kayakers were rescued after being stuck in a storm Saturday near Middle River, according to officials. The region has been under a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the afternoon, with the potential for isolated damaging storms until 7 p.m.

Authorities were called to the 7400 block of Graces Quarters Road in Chase at 4:31 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, fire officials said.

Someone called 911 after seeing overturned kayaks during the storm, according to Marine Emergency Team 21, a division of the Community Fire Department of Bowleys Quarters, which conducted the rescues.

At the time, Baltimore County was under a severe thunderstorm warning calling for winds up to 60 mph.

The kayakers had been caught in downpours, according to Marine Emergency Team 21, whose Marine Unit 217 rescued them and stabilized one person experiencing a medical emergency due to the conditions, officials said. Once they had been rescued, the kayakers were taken to Dundee Creek Marina, where emergency medical personnel with the Baltimore County Fire Department were awaiting them.

All were rescued successfully, and nobody was hospitalized, the fire department reported before 5 p.m.
