MD Thanksgiving Weather Forecast: Wind Advisory, Power Outages

Strong winds could knock down trees and cause power outages in Maryland; a wind advisory runs into Thanksgiving day, officials say.

BALTIMORE, MD — While parts of the country are dealing with a winter snowstorm, high temperatures in the 50s across Maryland bring another kind of weather hazard for this Thanksgiving. Residents should expect strong winds Wednesday heading into Thursday afternoon — gusts could reach 50 miles per hour, and that could mean power outages.

The region is under a wind advisory from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. That means winds will be around 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph across much of Maryland, the District of Columbia and northern Virginia. Damaging winds could knock down trees and bring down power lines, leading to widespread outages, the agency said.

Drivers traveling for Thanksgiving should use caution in these conditions, and residents should secure outdoor items that winds could send flying.
