No Snow, Warm Temps: MD's Mild February Shown In New Data

Temperatures in parts of Maryland are above normal so far this month, said the Regional Climate Center. Here's the weekend weather forecast.

MARYLAND — No snow so far and toasty temperatures — winter in Maryland has been a no-show in February so far. To date, high temperatures have been much warmer than normal, with averages of more than 8 degrees above normal in Baltimore, according to new information released by the Northeast Regional Climate Center. All 35 major climate sites tracked by the agency were warmer than normal, with temperatures in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia among the highest in the region above normal.

In Baltimore, temperatures have been 8.6 degrees above normal from Feb. 1-15. While the normal temperature in Charm City for the first half of February is 34.5 degrees, it has averaged 43.1 degrees for the first 15 days of February 2020. That makes the month the fifth-warmest February in Baltimore if the trend continues.

At Washington's Dulles Airport, the normal temperature for the same time frame is 35 degrees, but this year temperatures have been 8 degrees warmer at 43 for the first half of the month. And at Washington National Airport, the normal high temperature for February is 37.7 degrees, but this year's highs have averaged 44.7 — 7 degrees above normal.

That makes the month the second-warmest February in the Washington, D.C., region if the trend continues.

Snowfall in Maryland, DC and northern Virginia is well below normal, too, the data shows.

In Baltimore, snowfall for the first 15 days in February is several inches below normal; 4.7 inches usually falls in that period. This year: none.

Washington, D.C., has also been nearly snow-free. While Dulles usually receives 4.5 inches of snow, this year it has received just a trace of snow in the first half of February. At Washington National, no snow has fallen; the airport should receive 3.4 inches of snow in February.

Below is the forecast for the next few days in Maryland:

Thursday: Cloudy, with a high near 41. Calm wind.

Thursday Night: Scattered flurries before 11pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 22. Light and variable wind becoming north 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 38. North wind 7 to 9 mph.

Friday Night: Clear, with a low around 26. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 50. West wind 3 to 8 mph.

Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 29.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 54.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34.
