Top 10 Weekend Bottlenecks In Maryland

Transportation authorities say they are working to ease congestion in one of Maryland's bottlenecks.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Planning is underway for improvements to Interstate 95 in Harford County, where the Maryland Transportation Authority approved $58 million in upgrades last fall to ease a bottleneck on the interstate. The project calls for maintaining four lanes of highway instead of three between the Maryland House rest area and MD 24.

I-95 at the MD 24 exit is one of the 10 most congested areas on the weekends, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority, which maintains the state's toll roads, tunnels and bridges. The agency aims to reduce hours drivers spend in traffic by adding an extra lane.

Here are the top 10 weekend bottlenecks across the state — in no particular order, as the levels of congestion may vary based on the weekend — the Maryland Transportation Authority reports:

  • I-95 north at exit 77 (MD 24)
  • I-95 south at exit 77 (MD 24)
  • I-495 counterclockwise at exit 22 (MD 295/MD 193)
  • I-495 counterclockwise at exit 40 (Cabin John Parkway)
  • I-495 clockwise at exit 15 (MD 214/Central Avenue)
  • I-495 clockwise at exit 31 (MD 97/Georgia Avenue)
  • MD 295 north at Powder Mill Road
  • MD 295 south at MD 198
  • US 50 west at William Preston Lane Bridge
