Landfills Reopen, Yard Waste Pickup Resumes In Baltimore County

Services that had been suspended amid the new coronavirus pandemic are set to resume in Baltimore County this week.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Residential trash has increased significantly during the new coronavirus pandemic, according to County Executive Johnny Olszewski, who said that trash collectors were receiving an extra $75 a week as hazard pay during the pandemic.

During the week that ended April 18, officials said the county's trash haulers picked up almost 23 percent more tons of trash than the same week in 2019.

Maryland residents have been under a stay-at-home order since March 30.

Yard waste will resume as of Wednesday, April 22, for residents with "Y" days on their schedule, according to officials. Collection of yard waste material may continue as late as December.

People can set out as many bags of yard waste materials as they want, but they may not be collected on the same day. Residents should leave their bags out until they are picked up.

Officials ask residents to use lawn and leaf bags to contain their yard waste, not trash cans. The contents can include grass, leaves, vines, twigs, shrubbery trimmings, branches and limbs but should not be greater than 30 pounds. To be collected, branches and limbs must be no larger than 3 inches in diameter, no longer than 3 feet and tied in bundles less than 30 pounds.

Collection schedules are accessible on the Bureau of Solid Waste Management website, which are also available by calling 410-887-2000 or accessing the county’s BaltCoGo app.
