75% Of State Has Met Maryland's Coronavirus Testing Goal: Hogan

As hospitalizations and confirmed cases increase, six counties in Maryland have not yet met the state's benchmark for coronavirus testing.

MARYLAND — Nearly 7,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Maryland in the past week. On Monday, state health officials said 554 positive test results were being reported in the last day, bringing the total confirmed cases in Maryland to 78,685.

Prince George's County has seen more than 20,000 cases of the virus, by far the highest number of any jurisdiction in the state.

So far about three-quarters of the state has met the goal of testing 10 percent of the population, according to Gov. Larry Hogan. Those that have not yet are Calvert, Cecil, Charles, Garrett, Harford and Queen Anne's counties.

More than 220 testing sites statewide are checking people for COVID-19.

Calvert County has tested the least — with 7.7 percent of its residents tested for the virus as of Monday morning.

On the other end of the spectrum, Somerset County tops the state's 24 jurisdictions, with 22.7 percent of its population tested for the virus, state health officials report.

Coronavirus patients have increased recently in Maryland hospitals, which have admitted 60 patients with the virus in the past two weeks.

Compared with a month ago, however, overall hospitalizations are down from 644 on June 20; there are 460 hospitalized coronavirus patients as of Monday morning, according to the Maryland Department of Health.
