Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Maryland

Thunderstorms are expected across Maryland to start the week, and some could be severe. See the latest forecast.

MARYLAND — A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for much of Maryland on Sunday, with the National Weather Service forecast calling for severe thunderstorms that could bring winds or large hail, along with flooding.

Areas included in the outlook are: Cecil, Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary's, Calvert, Montgomery, Howard and Harford counties.

The hazardous weather outlook is for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and District of Columbia.

"Isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts or large hail is possible late this afternoon and evening," the weather service said. "An isolated instance of flooding is also possible during this time."

Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon and evening. Damaging winds are the primary threat, but large hail and isolated tornadoes are possible as well, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed the Baltimore-DC region in a level 3 out of 5 “enhanced” risk of severe thunderstorms on Monday.

“Locally damaging winds and some hail will be the primary severe risks, though a tornado or two will also be possible during the afternoon,” the Storm Prediction Center said.

Storms on Monday are most likely from mid-afternoon to early evening, according to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

"High-resolution models suggest storms could be in the vicinity of the Beltway around 4 p.m. pushing toward Southern Maryland and the eastern shore around 6 p.m, although this timing could shift," the Post said.

Sunday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then isolated showers and thunderstorms between 8pm and 11pm. Patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 2pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Patchy fog before 10am. High near 81. Light south wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 57. West wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 77. West wind 7 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 53.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 73.
