MD Weather: Cold Front Brings 70s Back For Highs This Week

Thunderstorms ended Maryland's scorching heat, and this week's forecast calls for normal highs in the 70s.

MARYLAND — Severe thunderstorms are expected to bring an end to Maryland's scorching heat, bringing rain and cooler temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Sunday for much of Maryland.

Heat and humidity will combine to make it feel like the mid-90s Sunday.

"Scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging. wind and large hail are possible through this evening," the NWS said. "Isolated instances of flooding are possible, as well."

Highs will reach the low 90s in Maryland on Sunday, then drop into the 70s to start the work week.

In Baltimore, the mercury surged to a high of 95 just hours before the post time for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, becoming the hottest race day in over 30 years for the event, Accuweather said.

"The temperature also came dangerously close to the record for the date set in 1934, when temperatures climbed to 96 F," the weather site said.

Evening showers and thunderstorms on the East Coast will be followed by a dip in the jet stream and a sharp cooldown on Monday, with temperatures returning to nearly seasonable levels to start the workweek, according to Accuweather.
