SRYA Releases Details on Expanded Field Hockey Program

Now in its second year, the SRYA field hockey program is offering additional skill levels for high school students.

The following post was submitted by Jenny Yates, head of the South River Youth Athletics' (SRYA) field hockey program.

We decided to start field hockey for SRYA in 2011 because it was not being offered, but a lot of girls wanted to play and needed a program. New to the program this year will be a senior team that will provide the high school aged girls a place to play if they are not playing on the high school team.

We feel that sports are important at all ages because the kids learn so many life lessons while having fun playing a sport. We teach them sportsmanship, teamwork, build self-confidence, and provide coaches who are good role models. Practices are twice a week and will start in August. Games will start after Labor Day and could be one to two times per week.

The SRYA field hockey teams offered:

  • Sticklettes-grades K-2
  • Pee Wee-grades 3-4
  • Middie-grades 5-6
  • Juniors-grades 7-8
  • Senior-grades 9-12 (cannot play on a high school team at the same time)

We have excellent coaches who are very committed to the success of our program and take pride in teaching the girls more than just the sport of field hockey. Our coaches have both field hockey and coaching experience and continue to attend trainings/clinics to learn the latest about our sport.

We also do lots of fun things throughout the season including kick off/team bonding parties, camps/clinics at local high schools and colleges, attend local high school and college games as a group, community service and end of season parties.

Parents can find more information and register online at  www.srya.org. Anyone with questions can contact commissioners Alex and Jenny Yates at  fieldhockey@srya.org

Registration should be done as soon as possible as some teams are filling up. The highlight of our first year as commissioners was having 4 teams, one in each age group (Sticklettes, Pee Wee, Middie and Junior).

We would like to thank the coaches and players from South River High for helping us hold free clinics and a few local businesses for their sponsorship during our first year.
