More Walmart Mac and Cheese Packs Recalled for Salmonella Risk

More packages of single-serving microwavable macaroni and cheese sold under Walmart's Great Value brand have been added to a recall of products because the cheddar cheese seasoning in the packaging could be contaminated with salmonella.

TreeHouse Foods Inc. announced the amended recall on Wednesday of the "Great Value" Walmart storevbrand, as well as two other brands, due to updated information from the supplier that used a milk powder in the seasoning that has the potential salmonella contamination. No illness has been reported.

Salmonella is a bacterium that is known to cause abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. Most people who are exposed to it recover without the need for treatment. Some people, however, experience symptoms so severe that hospitalization is required, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration explained in its recall alert. People with compromised immune systems, infants and the elderly are at the highest risk for severe reactions.

The mac and cheese cups were distributed nationwide through retailers, says the Oak Brook, Illinois, firm.
