New Parking Meters into Effect in 2013, Exactly When Unclear

The county does not have a 'firm date' for when the new meters will begin collecting money.

New Parking Meters into Effect in 2013, Exactly When Unclear

New parking meters in Ellicott City’s Historic District have been installed and line Main Street and Maryland Avenue. The meters, which were put in place in early November, are hidden under padlocked covers, set to “go live” after Jan. 1.

But when, exactly, after Jan. 1 is not yet clear.

“We don’t have a firm ‘go live’ date,” Director of Special Projects for the Department of Planning and Zoning Steve Lafferty wrote in an email on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Lafferty said that – in large part because of the holidays – the county was not able to complete testing it needs to do before turning the meters on.

“We will be sure to give businesses, residents and the public adequate notice,” he said.

On Aug. 21, County Executive Ken Ulman announced a new parking program for the Historic District that included the installation of multi-space parking meters on Main Street, Maryland Avenue and County parking lots.

Hourly rates in two of the lots will also be raised by 25 cents – the new hourly rate for lots D and E will be 50 cents, rates in the remaining lots will stay the same. The meters on Main Street and Maryland Avenue will be $1 per hour.

All spaces that are currently unmetered will remain free.

From Nov. 22 – Jan. 1, parking in the Historic District has been free. Beginning Jan. 2, however, enforcement will return to parking spaces with operational meters.
