Obituary: Regina Dowling 1930-2014

Beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Regina Nell (Ferguson) Dowling left us Tuesday, May 20, 2014 to join our Father in heaven.  Regina is survived by her two children, Chuck Dowling and his wife, Carol, and Karen Regina Tavenner and her husband, Terry, grandchildren, Kimberly Tavenner, Christie Davis, and Kevin Dowling, and brother, David Ferguson and his wife, Donna.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Dowling, sister, Margaret N. Hardinger, and two brothers, Charles F. Ferguson and Ralph W. Ferguson.

Regina was born September 30, 1930 in Cumberland, MD, daughter of late Ralph W. Ferguson and Edna Davis Ferguson.  She attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing where she attained her nursing degree.  She began her career as a bedside nurse at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, MD and went on to become a pioneer in the medical field of Apheresis through her 26 years of hard work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  Upon her retirement in 1990, the NIH Patient Apheresis Clinic was named in her honor, “Dowling Apheresis Clinic.”  She was also recognized in Who’s Who in Nursing 1993-1994. During her retirement, she volunteered at the Mercy Health Clinic in Gaithersburg, MD.

Regina was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Germantown, MD.  She enjoyed quilting, genealogy, playing games, and spending time with her dear friends and family.

A celebration of Regina’s life will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at her church, Trinity, in Germantown, MD, beginning with a viewing from 4:00 - 5:30, immediately followed by a service at 5:30, concluding with a meal and time of fellowship after.
