Wal-Mart Wants a Bigger Building

Planning Board will hear site plan proposal Thursday.

Wal-Mart Wants a Bigger Building

On Thursday, the Montgomery County Planning Board will hear a proposal to make the at Milestone Center bigger.

The company wants to expand its is 149,435 square feet facility in Germantown to 165,298, an increase of about 10 percent. The expansion would occur mostly on the northeast side of the building, over part of the parking lot next to Best Buy, according to documents submitted to the planning board.

Milestone Center is a shopping center on the east side of Germantown bound by Frederick Road, Ridge Road, Observation Drive and Shakespeare Boulevard — the main entrance to Wal-Mart.

County planners have suggested that the board approve the site plan if other conditions are met.

County transportation staff determined that Wal-Mart’s existing entry points and internal traffic patterns would not need to change if the proposed expansion took place. But Wal-Mart would have to pay $305,100 in order to mitigate potential traffic increases during peak travel hours, board documents state.

The proposal is not expected to have environmental impacts, board records state.

The planning board estimates the expansion would add 60 full-time jobs and 40 part time jobs.
