Abandoned Backpack Leads to Bomb Squad Visit

The fire department determined there was no threat. Students at Brooklyn Park Elementary School were forced to stay inside for about an hour.

Abandoned Backpack Leads to Bomb Squad Visit

An unclaimed backpack led to the arrival of the local bomb squad Thursday morning in the area near Brooklyn Park Elementary School.

Lt. Cliff Kooser of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said firefighters responded shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday to a report of a suspicious package near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Morgan Road in Brooklyn Park.

The Annapolis bomb squad came to the scene and determined that the backpack did not pose a threat.

Fire officials notified the nearby school, and requested that students be kept inside for about an hour while technicians evaluated the backpack. Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokeswoman Maneka Monk said there was no other disruption to the school day.
