I used to sit on my grandparents' sailboat on Pier 6 at the as a kid, watching a dog take flight off the dock at the launch ramp, soaring after a toy thrown by his owner.
On Saturday, I'll be the dog.
In virtually the same spot the dog used to plunge into the refreshing summer water, I'll be joining a couple dozen dedicated lunatics in taking the plunge—or dunk, rather—for charity.
My wife, Liz, and I will be participating in to benefit the Susquehanna Hose Company.
Patch is one of the sponsors of the event, too. Look for our logo on the shirts they'll be giving to dunkers and selling to spectators.
You might say that Havre de Grace Patch is all-in on the . I'm just not sure how "all in" I'll be getting on Saturday.
Liz and I debated the topic earlier in the week. I had the same conversation with Shyla Glassman at after the .
Shyla is determined not to get her hair wet. Probably a good plan, considering the temperatures are probably going to be in the high-30s at best.
There will be a at , and a breakfast and registration at the morning of the dunk.
The public is welcome to the pre-dunk party Friday night and to the dunk itself. Spectators are welcome, though we may make fun of you for not joining in—because, after all, we're not crazy.
I've been in the water on the flats, around Garrett Island and the sand islands a few miles south of . I've even been in the shallow water on the south side of the island, where a long sand bar makes for a decent summer swimming spot.
However, I've never been in the water at the , itself.
I'm just wondering what my mindset will be in the moments leading up to the dunk. And I'm still not sure exactly what I'll wear for this frigid wake-up.
I have ruled out some options.
And I'll also be wearing more than that dog I used to watch from Pier 6.
Nobody wants to see that.
