New Hyattsville Elem. School to Open Next Year

County school officials say project on pace for next school year, still undecided on school name.

New Hyattsville Elem. School to Open Next Year

The under-construction Hyattsville Area Elementary School will be ready for next school year, according to cautiously optimistic officials from the Prince George's County Public School System.

In a brief presentation before the Hyattsville City Council last night, Yale Stenzler, interim director of the capital programs for PGCPS, said that the project is moving ahead on schedule, with a projected completion date by the end of August 2013.

"The expectation is that it will be ready for the next school year," said Stenzler as he showed members of the council a rendering of the finished school.

County, city and state officials broke ground on the school this past spring. It will serve elementary-age children in the West Hyattsville area.

The school property can currently only be accessed through Nicholson Street, but this will change soon. The plan calls for Editors Park Drive to be extended north of Nicholas Orem Middle School to reach the new school. The building will front Editors Park Drive and the school will eventually have an Editors Park Drive address.

Still unknown is what the school would be named. On architechtural renderings, the school bears the name "Hyattsville Elementary School," a moniker already taken by the Hyattsville Elementary School on 43rd Avenue. Stenzler said that officials were in the process of selecting an appropriate name, but did not have specific details on that aspect of the project.
