Arrest Made in April 17 Strong Arm Carjacking
Arrest made in April 17 Safeway parking lot carjacking.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the 55-year-old female victim, who reported that she parked her vehicle in a parking spot when a male suspect approached her driver’s side door and demanded her vehicle keys.
The suspect then entered the victim’s vehicle, forcibly removed the victim from the driver’s seat and pulled her into the back seat. The suspect then took control of the victim’s vehicle.
The victim exited the vehicle and the suspect was last observed driving the victim’s vehicle through the parking lot towards Ridge Road. The victim suffered minor injuries from a struggle with the suspect and she was treated at the scene.
Officers searched the area for the suspect and the victim’s vehicle, but were unable to locate that vehicle. No weapon was displayed or implied during the incident.
On Sunday, April 20, the Metropolitan Police Department received information on the whereabouts of the Dodge Caravan, taken in the strong arm carjacking.
The vehicle was recovered in the area of Suitland Parkway and Sterling Firth Blvd., Washington D.C. Detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Western District were notified and continued the investigation.
Through the use of various investigative means, the suspect in this case was identified.
On Wednesday, April 23, members of the Western District Detective Unit, along with assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department and the Prince George’s County Police Department, located and arrested the suspect in the carjacking at the Safeway without incident at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Saint Barnabas Road, Suitland, Maryland.
The suspect, identified as Michael Kirk Smith, 44, of Washington, D.C. was transported to Western District where he was charged with carjacking, robbery, motor vehicle theft, and second degree assault.
