Three adults and five children were displaced by a fire that tore through the basement of a home in Odenton on Monday evening.

Firefighters responded at about 5 p.m. to the home on the 500 block of Oakton Road and found heavy smoke and fire.

Division Chief Keith Swindle of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said it took about an hour for 28 firefighters to get the blaze under control. Crews from Anne Arundel County, Fort Meade and BWI Airport responded to the scene.

No one was hurt, but Swindle said eight people received assistance from the Red Cross.

The fire caused an initial damage estimate of $35,000. The cause remains under investigation.
