Man Flees NSA Checkpoint, Drives Wrong Way on Parkway: Police

A man who reportedly fled a traffic stop on National Security Administration property near Odenton was stopped following a high-speed chase when he drove the wrong direction on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, authorities said. 

NSA officers tried to conduct a traffic stop of the SUV driven by Darnell David Hawkins Jr., 32, about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday as it approached a checkpoint on Route 32 in Anne Arundel County, says WBFF TV. Hawkins pulled into a staging area and stopped, police say, but he then accelerated, injuring one NSA officer and nearly striking a barricade as his vehicle left. 

Hawkins’ SUV was chased along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, reports WJLA TV. Maryland state troopers joined NSA officers in the pursuit near West Nursery Road after they saw his vehicle driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the parkway.

After about 15 minutes, authorities managed to stop Hawkins when the tires on his SUV were punctured.

Neither Hawkins nor troopers were injured during the pursuit, but an NSA officer suffered minor injuries.

A motive for the chase was not immediately known, authorities said.

Hawkins was charged with attempting to elude police, reports the Washington Examiner.
