Police: 5-Year-Old Takes Methadone, Father Charged

A Severn man was arrested on multiple drug-related charges and child neglect charges are pending after he told police his 5-year-old son accidentally took methadone Tuesday night.

According to a press release from Anne Arundel County police, officers responded to the 1200 block of Reece Road in Severn for a report of a 5-year-old boy not breathing after he accidentally took methadone.

The child’s father advised that CPR was performed on the boy and fire department personnel immediately took over resuscitation efforts and successfully revived the child, according to police. The boy was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

Police said the child's father allegedly gave officers a bottle of pink liquid that he said was methadone, and an investigation revealed that it was purchased illegally.

According to the police press release, a further investigation revealed the presence of additional illegal drugs inside of the home and—upon execution of the search warrant—suspected cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine was found in the home along with a loaded .357 Magnum and a .22 caliber rifle.

Police charged 28-year-old Paul Kristopher Brooks, of 1200 Reece Road in Severn, with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine; possession of methadone, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine; two counts of possession of a firearm in commission of a drug trafficking crime and one count of firearm accessible to a minor.

Charges are pending on an additional suspect and the investigation is ongoing into possible child neglect charges, according to police.
