Before New Murder Trial, 'Serial' Subject Adnan Syed Asks Again for Bail

The attorney for Syed, who has been jailed for more than 17 years, says standards for bail are different given new developments in the case.

BALTIMORE, MD — "Serial" star Adnan Syed has asked a judge to review his request for bail since his murder conviction has been vacated.

Syed was sentenced to life in prison in 2000 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee while they were teenagers attending Woodlawn High School.

The podcast "Serial" cast doubt on Syed's guilt, bringing to light unreliable cell phone data and an alibi witness never called to the stand.

Syed petitioned and was granted an appeal in 2015.

Judge Martin P. Welch vacated Syed's conviction in June 2016.

Syed — who has been incarcerated for more than 17 years — requested to be released on bail as he awaits a new trial.

When he denied the request, the judge cited among other factors that Syed was a flight risk since he would be facing a life sentence for murder if retried.

Syed's attorney says the judge "applied the wrong legal standard," alleging he used post-conviction rather than pre-trial standards in making the determination.
