How to Get to Preakness 2016: Parking, Transit, Traffic

Public transportation is suggested for getting to Preakness. Here's what to know before you go.

More than 130,000 people attended last year's Preakness, state officials say, so those attending Saturday's race should be prepared for a crowd.

To avoid sitting in traffic, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) advises taking public transportation such as the light rail, metro subway or bus.

Here are the MTA routes to get to Pimlico Race Course:

From Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Glyndon, Old Court or Milford Mill, take the Metro Subway to the Rogers Avenue Station. Then hop aboard the connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.

From downtown Baltimore, take the Metro Subway from Charles Center or Lexington Market to Rogers Avenue Station. Take the connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.

Parking

Parking is available near the race course for various prices. See the full list and parking map here.

Reserving a parking pass will guarantee you a parking space until 3 p.m., according to the Preakness website, and officials say the lots will "probably fill by noon."

Traffic

Here are the special traffic patterns that will be in place on Preakness weekend:

1. ROGERS AVE. will be closed to all vehicle traffic from Winner Ave. to Northern Pkwy. from 10 p.m. Thursday, May 19, until 9 p.m. Preakness night, Saturday, May 21. (Pedestrian foot traffic only).

2. WINNER AVE. will be one-way Northbound from Hayward Ave. to Northern Parkway beginning at 10:00 p.m. Thursday night, May 19 until 9 p.m. Preakness night, May 21.

3. HAYWARD AVE. will be one-way Eastbound from Park Heights Ave. to Winner Ave. beginning at 7 a.m. Preakness morning, May 21, until 3 p.m. Preakness Day.

4. HORSEMEN: A temporary one-way entrance for automobile traffic to the Hayward Stable Area entrance will be created through the #6 Press Lot behind Barn E, accessible via Winner Ave. beginning at 7 a.m. Black-Eyed Susan morning, Friday, May 20, until 9 p.m. Preakness night Saturday, May 21.

How to Watch Preakness at Home

WBAL will carry live coverage starting at 1 p.m. from Pimlico. NBC Sports will broadcast live from Pimlico at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, with coverage continuing on NBC at 5 p.m.

XBTV will also carry live coverage online and interviews from Black-Eyed Susan Day and Preakness.
