Local Mega Millions Winner 'In Denial'

That didn’t take long.

The  Mega Millions Jackpot winner has come forward, just two days after the Maryland Lottery announced that the winning ticket had been sold in Howard County.

A grandmother of two, the winner said she plans to buy a house or two, according to a statement released by the Maryland Lottery.

Preferably on the beach.

“This will be the first time anyone from our family has ever owned a home,” the winner told Lottery officials.

The 48-year-old retiree and her fiancé joked Tuesday night that they might wake up millionaires, according to a statement released by Lottery officials. It seems she still isn’t certain if it’s a joke.

“I am still in denial,” said the winner, who wants to remain anonymous.  “I even drove by the store the next day to see if it was real. One look at the parking lot with all the news vans and I knew it was true.”

She shares the title of Maryland Mega Millions Jackpot winner with the “ Three Amigos,” three Maryland public school employees who split a $218.6 million jackpot last year.

The Mega Millions game is played in 44 states and jurisdictions. Since it began, in 1973, it has paid out more than $19.8 billion in prizes and, according to the statement, $12.8 billion in revenue to the state of Maryland.

The winning numbers in Tuesday night’s drawing (1, 15, 19, 30, 56 and Mega Ball 28) are worth $26 million, which the winner can claim as an annuity over time, or as $19 million cash.

The Mt. Airy Shell Station at 649 Lakeview Drive, where the winning ticket was purchased, also wins – a $26,000 commission.

The winner told Lottery officials that after she checked her numbers online she had her daughter double check for her. After verifying she’d won, the winner jokingly told her daughter that she wouldn’t be able to babysit her grandkids any more.

Unless it was at the beach.
