Police Chase Ends With Carjacking in Rockville, Injures Drivers and Officers

A police chase that ended with a carjacking in Rockville injured two police officers and sent one unsuspecting motorist to the hospital on Wednesday, according to the statement of charges filed in Montgomery County District Court.

Glenn V. Rhodes, 34, who has no fixed address, was charged with carjacking, assault and resisting arrest. The charges stem from a string of incidents that began with a traffic stop in White Oak, the court records show.

Police said they tried to stop Rhodes at an off ramp on Columbia Pike in White Oak after they discovered the car he was driving had stolen tags. Rhodes refused to stop and turned left onto Randolph Road, police said in the statement of charges.

As he drove on, police said, Rhodes struck a Toyota Tacoma at Kemp Mill Road, then struck two more vehicles—a Toyota RAV 4 and a Honda CRV—at Veirs Mill Road. Police said the driver of the Toyota had to be hospitalized.

Police said Rhodes struck a fourth vehicle after running a red light at Selfridge Road in Wheaton.

The string of crashes reportedly smashed the right side of Rhodes’s black Honda Civic and blew out the two right-side tires.

But it didn’t stop the chase.

Police said the Honda Civic died after Rhodes jumped a curb and drove across the parking lot of Loehmanns Plaza Shopping Center in Rockville and wound up back on the east side of Randolph Road.

It was then, police said, that Rhodes tried to carjack a Mazda Protégé in traffic at Randolph Road and Parklawn Drive.

According to court records, Rhodes “dove” into a driver’s side window. As the driver tried to regain control of the car he drove into a marked police cruiser, but did not cause damage, the court records said.

Police said two officers suffered minor injuries, having to drag Rhodes from the Mazda. The driver also suffered minor injuries, police said.

None were taken to the hospital, according to police.

A 23-year-old woman from Edgewater, who was in the car with Rhodes was arrested on a drug charge.

A court hearing for Rhodes was set for May 5. Attorney information was not listed for Rhodes in court records accessed online.
