Celebrate Severna Park on Sunday

The first official Celebrate Severna Park day will take place on Sunday at the Community Center.

Members of the community will unite on Sunday for a day of fun and celebration during the town’s first official Celebrate Severna Park day.

The celebration will take place at the Severna Park Community Center (SPCC) from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is free to the public. There will be music, awards, food, history and fun for everyone, according to SPCC Assistant Executive Director Marion Wear.

“Here in this area, we have something special as far as community goes, so to have an event that celebrates that with local groups, businesses and local people is great,” Wear said. “We wanted to have something to encourage that sense of community.”

According to Wear, Celebrate Severna Park is a combination of three groups. In the past, the ASPIRE organization has done Heritage Day, and the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce has hosted Saturday or Sunday in the Park. Celebrate Severna Park combines the two days and adds in the Community Center.

“This is the first actual Celebrate Severna Park, but we combined it with several things,” Wear said. “This day is also about the present, not just the past. The Community Center specifically brings the future because many of our programs pertain to children.”

The day will still include the popular history tours from Heritage Day, led by local historian Scott Jay. This year, they have added a bus tour to the event as well. Wear said they will use the Community Center bus so they can cover a larger area during the tour.

The celebration will also include music from several different artists, including the Severna Park Bums. There will be games and activities for kids as well as lots of local vendors.

Jennie Boden, the new Executive Director of the SPCC, said she is looking forward to getting to meet new people during the event, which she hopes will become an annual affair.

“I think I am really excited to come to all these events and start meeting more people,” Boden said. “I am really happy we are hosting it. I want the Community Center to be more widely known in the area. I think hosting events like this is exactly what we were meant to do. It is a good use of our space and facilities.”

Celebrate Severna Park will run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Severna Park Community Center, which is located at 623 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. The event is free to the public. For a complete schedule see the PDF attached to this article.
