227 Area Code Assigned For New Phone Numbers In MD Starting Next Week

Due to the high demand for new phone numbers in Maryland, the new 227 area code will go into effect next week.

MARYLAND — Starting Wednesday, customers in Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's and Washington counties requesting a new phone number in the 240/301 area code region will be assigned the new 227 area code.

Due to the high demand for new telephone numbers, the Maryland Public Service Commission decided in September 2021 to assign the new 227 area code to the existing 240/301 area code region.

The 240/301/227 area code complex will serve all or parts of these communities:

Other smaller communities will also fall under the new area code.

Just like customers from the 240/301 area code region, customers assigned the new 227 area code will be required to dial the area code and phone number for all local calls.

Since dialing 10 digits is already a well-established practice in the region, the addition of the new area code should not alter the way people are making local calls, with the exception of having to use the new 227 when necessary, officials said.

Here are the basic facts about the 240/301/227 area code changes, according to a release from the Maryland Public Service Commission:

  • Telephone numbers, including the current area codes, will not change.
  • The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
  • What is a local call now will remain a local call.
  • Customers will continue to dial 10 digits for local calls within and between the overlay area codes, and 1+10 digits for long distance calls.
  • Customers can still dial just three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, and 811 if those are currently available in your community.
