Surveillance Cameras at Lutherville Light Rail a Long-Term Goal

An MTA police officer may have been misinformed when addressing Greater Timonium Community Council members.

Surveillance Cameras at Lutherville Light Rail a Long-Term Goal

A Maryland Transit Administration police lieutenant may have spoken out of turn when he told a meeting room full of Lutherville-Timonium community leaders that the Lutherville light rail stop would have a surveillance camera installed by the end of the year.

The lieutenant was invited to the monthly meeting by Greater Timonium Community Council president Eric Rockel, who said he too heard that the cameras would be installed "sometime this year."

Joe Sviatko, a spokesman for the administration, said the lieutenant may have been misinformed.

"The MTA has a long term goal to install cameras at all MTA Light Rail Stations as funding becomes available," Sviatko said in a statement. "However, there are no allocated funds or definite time line for installing closed circuit cameras at the Lutherville Light Rail Station at this time."

Sviatko added that the administration has installed security cameras at the Baltimore and Centre streets stops.

Rockel, who also chairs a committee on the Lutherville Community Association board, said he has been aware of the administration's efforts to bring cameras to Lutherville for over a year now.

About 16 months ago, another MTA representative told a meeting room full of Lutherville community stakeholders that the administration was actively seeking funding for cameras via a grant offered by Department of Homeland Security.
