Business Profile: Kittredge Candles (VIDEO)

Bacon-scented candles? You betcha.

Name: Kittredge Candles

What they sell: Highly scented soy candles, soaps and lotions

Website: facebook.com/pages/Kittredge-Candles/136265525939 or etsy.com/shop/kittredgecandles

The Scoop: This Andover-based business came to be after Jennifer Hickman was laid off from her corporate gig and rediscovered the candle-making skills she honed in junior high.

Lables decorated with leather jackets, slabs of bacon, handfuls of dirt and pizza pies catch the eye and matching scents tickle the nostrils. While customers are often drawn to the unusual, Kittredge Candles isn't limited to gimicky fragrances and also offers more traditional scents, such as lavender, lilac, love potion and blue hydrangea.

According to Hickman, Kittredge Candles has about 180 frangrances available online and typically brings about 90 of them to shows and farmers markets. While Yankee Candle grabbed headlines recently with the big reveal of its "Man Candles," Hickman says Kittredge Candles has been in the business of making candles that smell like fresh cut grass, nachos and pipe tobacco almost since the company launched in 2009.

This interview with Kittredge Candles was done at the Lexington Farmers Market.
