Welcome to the first part of a three part series that looks back on the 2011 Andover High School fall athletic season.
Today we look at the soccer teams. Tomorrow we’ll feature the field hockey and volleyball teams, and on Wednesday, we’ll assess the football team.
If the regular season was the only thing that counted towards the Warriors’ report card, they probably would have gotten an A.
Andover finished its regular season as one of the most feared teams in the state.
Their regular season record was 14-0-3, which was good for the 3rd seed in the MIAA Division 1 North tournament.
Everything appeared to be going according to plan for Andover. Their regular season was simply dominant as they captured the down the stretch.
Andover had a bye in the preliminary round of the playoffs.
In the first round, the Warriors were shocked by a Cinderella North Andover squad that would go all the way to the semifinals.
North Andover won in penalty kicks after two overtime periods. The heartbreaking loss ended what would otherwise be considered, a perfect season.
The boys team had a rough go of it in 2011. Their inconsistency was a major factor that kept them out of the MIAA Divison 1 North playoffs.
The Warriors closed out the season at a 6-8-5 clip.
Andover appeared to be headed in the right direction during a five game undefeated streak. The Warriors won three and tied two in five consecutive games in September.
They also won three straight against Lawrence, Methuen, and Dracut in early October. Both streaks showed potential, but a late season slide followed their three game winning streak.
Andover went winless in its final seven games of the season, losing five and tying two.
The sting of 2011 will go a long way in helping to motivate the team for its 2012 campaign, which couldn’t come soon enough for the Warrior soccer players.
