Federal and state offices are closed but many business are open.

What's Open, Closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Arlington

On Monday, Jan. 21, Massachusetts observes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday (actually on Jan. 15).

While King's Birthday is one of ten holidays recognized by the federal government, the feds don't require employers to pay workers for this holiday from work. Businesses traditionally provide their employees with a paid holiday as part of a benefits package because most other employers do the same.

And according to the Massachusetts Secretary of State's office, business and commercial activities may operate as usual.

Closed today:

• Arlington Town Hall

• Robbins and Fox libraries

• Recreation Office

• Arlington Senior Center

• DPW Administrative Offices and Inspectional Services

• Post offices and regular deliveries

• Bank offices; although some branches will be open in certain supermarkets

Open:

• Many businesses

• Stores

• Supermarkets

• Convenience stores

• Establishments that sell beer and wine are also allowed to be open

Trash and Recycling:

From the town: There will be no trash collection on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Monday's collection will be picked up on Tuesday. There will be a one-day delay for the remainder of the week. The Friday pickup will be collected on Saturday. This schedule applies to trash and recycling. Please refer to your Recycling & Trash Collection Guide for other rules regarding trash and recycling or visit  arlingtonma.gov/recycle.

MBTA:

• Buses will operate on a Saturday schedule. Some bus routes will not run ( full list here).

• Commuter rail trains will operate on its regular weekday schedule. 

• Subway lines will operate on a Saturday schedule.
