Attleboro Elementary School Schedules Changed

For the third consecutive year, there will be a change to the schedules for Attleboro's elementary schools. The School Committee voted 8-0 (Teri Enegren was absent) on Monday for a two-tiered schedule system in an effort to curb long bus rides. This year, all the elementary schools are on the same 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. schedule.

Under the new system, which will go into effect in the fall,  and  will be open for classes from 8:15 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Classes at ,  and  will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

Committee Vice Chair Brenda Furtado said she had heard from many parents who did not want the schedules changed again. She said she did not like having to make the changes.

"Unfortunately, we found out that going to no tiers … that we had repercussions," Furtado said. "So again, the School Committee, we're trying to figure it out. It's not like every year we want to change this. We take recommendations; we try it, and if it doesn’t work, we have to go back to the drawing board."

During the six professional development days, classes will take place at all five schools from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Some committee members were concerned about this being an inconvenience for parents, but Superintendent Pia Durkin said there was no other possibility.
