Massachusetts Weather Forecast: Storm Brewing for Tuesday, Wednesday

Snow will return, but first a very windy Super Bowl Sunday.

Snow may be returning to Massachusetts as part of a storm making its way across the region early in the week. But before worrying about whether you need a shovel or an umbrella, you'll have to get to through a very blustery Sunday night.

The weather for Super Bowl parties Sunday will be cloudy with a minimal chance of precipitation - and very, very windy. It will also be cold, with "real-feel" temperatures dropping from the high 20s at kickoff to the mid-to-low 20s by the time New England is celebrating its fifth Super Bowl title.

Wind gusts could be 40 miles per hour over Eastern and Southeastern Mass., with gusts of about 25-30 mph west of I-95 through to Central Mass.

What about that storm you mentioned?

Glad you asked! As is usually the case days out, specifics are sparse, but Weather.com says to expect something of a wintry mix in what promises to be a miserable Tuesday:

  • "The I-95 corridor, north of New York City, may see accumulating snowfall initially, including the Boston metro area.
  • Warmer air pushes in from the south later Tuesday, changing the I-95 Boston-to-New York City corridor over to mainly rain."

The National Weather Service says things could start Tuesday morning. The greatest chance for more than 2 inches of snow or a quarter-inch of ice will be in northern Massachusetts; About an inch is expected south of the Mass Pike. NWS is stressing these are preliminary estimates.

THANKS, DONALD: Trump Wants the Country to Pay More Attention to Boston

Wednesday's precipitation will depend on how quickly temperatures rise, Weather.com said.

  • "Any snow in New England likely changes over to sleet or freezing rain, and eventually over to rain as temperatures continue to warm."

The NWS is warning of the potential for heavy wind gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning
