Braintree Manhole Fire Caused Power Outages Across Town

A catastrophic equipment failure caused a fire in a manhole and temporarily blacked out much of East and North Braintree.

BRAINTREE, MA — A fire in a manhole on Pearl Street knocked out power to several homes in town on Tuesday night.

The outage extended from Washington Street though Pearl Street and onto Ivory Street. Outages were reported in both East and North Braintree. Public utility Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) dispatched crews and worked to restore power. BELD said it had power restored a little after 8 p.m.

"We experienced a catastrophic equipment failure in an underground utility hole," BELD said in a statement on Facebook.

The MBTA announced trains on the Middleborough/Lakeville and Greenbush Lines experienced delays of 15-30 minutes due to the outage. The Kingston/Plymouth line experienced 35-40 minute delays. On the Red Line, shuttle buses replaced train service between Quincy Adams and Braintree stations.
