Founded in Boston in 2008, ULC exclusively uses the performing arts to increase awareness, de-stigmatize the disease and raise funds for cutting-edge early detection research. ULC’s founder, lung cancer survivor and Brookline native, Hildy Grossman, and jazz vocalist of the cabaret group Follen Angels, has combined her passions to bring awareness in hopes to change the disturbing facts of this disease.
“Every two and half minutes someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, and increasingly those diagnoses happen in the prime of life and to those who never smoked.” Grossman continues, “Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer, and more than 60% of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages when a cure is not feasible. The five-year survival rates for patients with advanced disease is less than 10%, but, if caught at the earliest stage, survival is greater than 70%. We need a reliable and easily accessible method to detect lung cancer earlier. That’s what our concerts are for-songs to save lives. We can and must do something, and we can do that together. The time is now.”
Now in its third year, Upstage Lung Cancer’s Sing Out! brings Boston’s musical and medical communities together for a common goal, to upstage lung cancer once and for all. “Music has the ability to heal in ways that are inexplicable. Our orchestra’s members are primarily healthcare professionals and they know this and are thrilled to use their musical talents as a complement to their work in medicine.” said Nick Adams, Executive Director of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. "We are excited to partner with Upstage Lung Cancer to help heal through music.”
Since its inception and in partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation, ULC has funded over $1 million in research grants, including a two-year grant to Dr. Rebecca Heist of Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center for innovative research in tumor genetics, to Dr. Feng Jiang of the University of Maryland for developing a method of early detection using saliva, and this year to Dr. Vadim Backman of Northwestern University for a new, early detection methodology to observe how cells change shape. #UpStageLungCancer
