Forty-two Chelmsford High School Students Tour Europe during February Vacation
CHS students had the opportunity, under the leadership of Mrs. Lauren Cochran, to travel to Paris, Provence and Barcelona during February vacation.
In the midst of a snowstorm on Thursday, February 13, fifty-two CHS students, faculty and chaperones flew out of Logan Airport for a wonderful European adventure. The group, comprised of several members of the CHS Theater Guild, headed to Paris, France. Their first stop was The Louvre Museum where students were treated to the ever-present Mona Lisa along with their viewing Venus De Milo, and five other Leonardo DaVinci paintings. Students climbed the Eiffel Tower (at least to the second floor) and then ventured up to the top via elevator. In addition, stops were made to MonteMarte and The Latin Quarter. The days in Paris culminated with an evening boat ride on the Seine.
Departing Paris, the group took the high-speed train to Provence. In the rush to de-train 52 people with suitcases in under 3 minutes (as the trainman blew his whistle repeatedly!), one suitcase was lost but retrieved two days later. Students toured the Palais de Papes in Avignon (The Pope’s Palace), took a boat ride in Cassis, stood beneath an ancient Roman aquaduct in Pont du Gard, and also walked the streets of a medieval fortress / town in Carcassonne. The trip finished in Barcelona where students were treated to a new language and churros Students were treated to the imagination of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi and also saw works by Picasso as a young man.
“It was so refreshing to hear students using both French and Spanish in one trip. It was delightful to witness them as they bargained with store clerks and ordered their crepes and churros,” said veteran group leader Lauren Cochran. “Immersion in a culture is one of the best ways for students to appreciate and practice their conversational skills in other languages as well as get a first rate history, social studies, and art lessons.” This was Mrs. Cochran’s 7th trip with students to Europe and hopes to continue. “I’m grateful to the school committee and the administration in Chelmsford. Their love for the arts is unmatched.”
Hopefully next year’s trip – Italy! Bon Voyage.
