Al Filipov Peace and Justice Forum to Honor John Hockenberry

The forum to honor the life of Al Filipov, a Concord man who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, will present the second annual award to journalist John Hockenberry.

The Al Filipov Peace & Justice Forum, which honors the memory of a beloved member of of Concord who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, announced earlier this month that John Hockenberry will receive the second annual Al Filipov Peace & Justice Award for his work as a journalist and advocate for the rights of the disabled.

As the Forum’s 2012 honoree, Hockenberry will speak—following the award’s presentation—on Wednesday, September 19 at 7 p.m. at in Concord.

“We are so excited to have John Hockenberry this year. I’ve seen his TED talks and read his book. He will deliver a powerful message,” said Loretta Filipov, on 9/11.

Hockenberry, a four-time Peabody Award winner and four-time Emmy award winner, will give a talk titled “The Main Event: Inclusion from Politics to the Paralympics.” He is currently co-host of “The Takeaway,” a radio show produced by Public Radio International and WNYC New York. He is also author of the best-selling memoir, Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs and Declarations of Independence.

The Al Filipov Peace & Justice Forum works to promote peace and justice among all people, and to demonstrate the power of an individual to make a positive difference in the world. Held annually in September since 2002, the Forum invites a distinguished individual to speak about his or her work and vision. Speakers are drawn from a variety of backgrounds and faith traditions, but all share the commitment of a life actively engaged for a more peaceful and equitable world. In recognition of the tenth anniversary of the events of 9/11, the Forum inaugurated the Al Filipov Peace & Justice Award to be presented annually on the evening of the Forum to honor the work of our distinguished speaker and to commend the speaker’s contributions to a more peaceful and just world.
