Update: Childcare Available at Town Meeting; Student Athletes in Concord Make the Grade

Childcare Available at Town Meeting

Concord’s annual Town Meeting begins Monday, 7 p.m., at Concord-Carlisle High School (500 Walden St.) Here in Massachusetts, we still practice the rather Colonial-style form of government, where all of us registered voters can say yea or nay to each article up for a vote. Our voice matters. While this is a wonderful thing, the downside is that you must be present to vote. Proxies and absentee ballots are not allowed.

I don’t want to get into the pros and cons of Town Meeting, but I understand how its schedule may not mesh with yours. The good news is that quality childcare is available at the high school while Town Meeting is in session. I have used this service in the past - granted, it’s been a few years - but I was comfortable knowing that our son was in good hands while my husband and I participated in town government. The program is run by the Recreation Department. Call 978-369-6460 and schedule the number of children, days and times you will need service. Whatever the cost, (which is always reasonable,) it is a small price to pay for the right to vote.

Student Athletes Make the Grade

Whether they attend , or , high school athletes in Concord make the grade. Throughout the week, I’ve posted the names of the standout student athletes, whose skill and endurance were recognized at the league and state levels for winter sports. So many students were honored that I had to devote three posts to name them all. Today is the final listing. I’m pretty sure I got everyone, but don’t hesitate to contact me if someone was inadvertently left out. Congratulations to you all. You have made your families, schools and community very proud.

Skiing: Concord-Carlisle has always achieved prominence in mountain artistry, as three of its students rose to the top this year as All-Scholastic skiers:

Michelle Solomon capped her senior year at CCHS with a second place finish in the slalom and a fifth place run at the MIAA State Alpine Championships. This is Michelle’s second year as All-Scholastic. She is a high honors student and a Mass Bay West Omega Division All-Star.

Also a senior at CCHS, Chris Burnham finished his high school career taking 3rd at the MIAA State Nordic Championships, third at the Weston Sprints, and during the regular season, he finished third in Mass Bay West. Chris will attend Colby College next year.

With another year to go, Junior Olivia Meyerson finished second at the MIAA State Nordic Championships and second during the regular season of Mass Bay West. Olivia qualified for the Junior Olympics in Minneapolis and was part of the winning state mixed-gender relay at the Eastern High School Championships.
Joining these three outstanding skiers as Mass Bay West All-Stars for CCHS were Calvin Wright, Nicholas Solomon, Andrew Solomon, Mark Rubinstein, Alex Nardone, Owen Guttadaro, Caitlin Guiney, Kate Driscoll and Brendan Canavan. Congratulations to them all for their excellence on the slopes.

At Middlesex School, Taylor McKenna, Nina Harrison and Maxwell Brown were named NEPSAC All-Stars.

Hockey: The surprise on the ice this year was Junior Jenny Robinson, who notched All-Scholastic honors. The center tallied 28 goals and 18 assists, as the CCHS Girls’ Hockey Team skated into the Division 2 state semifinals as the 11th seed. Jenny’s career totals now stand at 54-30-83. She earned All-Conference honors in the MVC/DCL, is a member of the National Honor Society and plays on the high school lacrosse team.

Skating alongside Jenny as MVC/DCL All-Stars were Greta White and Michaela Haller.

Also, Jordan Juron from Middlesex School was named an Independent School League All-Star.

For the boys, Zach Arnold and Blake Cormier were named ISL All-Stars for Middlesex School, and for CCHS, J.C. Winslow and Mike Anastos heated it up on the ice to be named MVC/DCL All-Stars.
