Market Basket HQ Workers Won't Show Up for Work Friday, Plan Rally

Workers at Market Basket's headquarters in Tewksbury say they won't go to work on Friday and instead will rally in support of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.

Market Basket HQ Workers Won't Show Up for Work Friday, Plan Rally

Market Basket employees are inviting customers and vendors to join them for a “Rally for Our Fight” at the company’s headquarters in Tewksbury on Friday morning as they plan to not go to work.

The group calling themselves “Save Market Basket” posted to its Facebook page on Thursday night that the rally in support of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the headquarters, 875 East St. in Tewksbury.

The group also said that employees at headquarters won’t be going to work on Friday, according to a post on the Save Market Basket Facebook page at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The action comes in reaction to a Thursday afternoon deadline that employees set for new co-CEOs Jim Gooch and Felicia Thornton, seeking to have Arthur T. Demoulas reinstated as CEO. It came and went and the co-CEOs said any workers that don't show up for work on Friday will be replaced.

Market Basket has 71 stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Demoulas was ousted as CEO last month by the board under control of Arthur T.'s cousin and rival, Arthur S. Demoulas.

“They will be backing up their words with actions and will be standing up for something they care so much for,” the statement said from "Save Market Basket" said. "They once again send the message to the board to bring back ATD and to the stores that they simply give them their support and nothing else.”
